Whispering Woods

Audio adventure for iPhone · Public beta

In this story, your head is your hands.

A fully voiced adventure you play by listening. Voices call from all around you. Turn toward them, nod or shake your head, and the story changes. Built first for players who are blind or have low vision.

Headphones on. About two minutes, right in your browser.

Close your eyes

Rain drips from the leaves. Somewhere to your left, a voice calls out. Turn toward it. The forest stays where it is, and the story turns with you.

A traveller in a blue cloak stands alone on a wet forest path at night, listening.
In your earsA girl's voice, two metres away, about forty degrees to your left.

Two ways to see it

Every voice has its place.

Every line is voiced and mixed in spatial audio. Sounds sit at fixed points around you, so when you turn your head, they stay put, the way a real forest would. The screen keeps you company, but you never need it.

What you hearA world around your head. Voices ahead, beside and behind you, each one where it stands.
The game screen in chapter two: a pixel-art wanderer by a misty forest stream, and Dorian's portrait ringed in gold above the line he is speaking.
What you holdThe same moment on your iPhone. Pixel-art scenes, the line being spoken, and a gold ring around whoever is talking.

How it plays

A scene in four moves.

  1. Listen

Voices speak from where they stand, and the narrator sets the scene. You can play with your eyes closed from the first line to the last.

Game screen in chapter one: Mira calls out by the ferns, her portrait ringed in gold while she speaks.
  2. Turn

When someone calls, turn your head toward them. Face a voice for two seconds to choose it, or tap its button.

Game screen: Mira calls from among the trees, and a button labelled Mira's call lets you choose her without turning.
  3. Answer

Nod for yes, shake for no. The game waits for a real answer and never rushes you.

Game screen: the question Do you speak to Tobin directly?, with Yes and No buttons.
  4. Live with it

Promises are kept or broken, and people remember. Every chapter has four endings to discover.

The chapter screen for Where Voices Fall Silent: its tagline, four endings still to discover and a Start button.

The controller

Three small moves. That's all.

With head-tracking headphones such as AirPods Pro, your head does the playing. With any other headphones, or the iPhone speaker, the same moves are buttons on the screen.

  • Nod

    Yes. Accept, agree, go on.

  • Shake

    No. Refuse, doubt, walk away.

  • Turn and hold

Choose a voice, a path or an offer.

  • The Ready to listen screen, with a choice of Gestures, Buttons or Simulation before you start.

    Or simply buttons

Prefer not to move? Pick Buttons before you start. VoiceOver reads every one.

Accessibility

Made for players who never look at the screen.

Whispering Woods is designed first for people who are blind or have low vision. The pictures are a bonus.

  • No sight needed

Every action has a labelled button that VoiceOver reads.

  • Nothing talks over the voices

Lines appear on screen instead of being read over the recording. Open the transcript whenever you want the words, sound cues included.

  • Pause and repeat, anytime

Replay the current line or step away. The story waits where you left it.

  • Text at any size

Screens reflow up to the largest accessibility sizes.

A chapter screen at the default text size.
